Mental ill health swept under the carpet in most workplaces

Most people still afraid to disclose a mental health problem to their employer. Mind and CIPD urge employers to get staff talking about mental health issues in 2012 as economic woes conspire to create the perfect ingredients for a surge in mental ill health.

The issue of mental ill health is still being swept under the carpet in most workplaces, with just four in ten employees saying they would feel confident to disclose a mental health problem to their employer.

Are Duvet Days the Answer?

Absences were stress is cited as a factor is a serious employment issue that reduces efficiency and affects productivity in the workplace. Giving people time off such as ‘duvet days’ (days that can be taken as leave at short notice) and introducing flexible working hours may not be the solution to prevent employees calling in sick. ‘Duvet days’ can negatively impact morale, missed days do not only disrupt workflow on a daily basis. By not addressing the issues that are causing staff to take duvet days organisations are compounding the problems.

Personal Relationships Affected by Pressures at Work

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) found that a poor work-life balance could “drive a wedge” between partners, when it surveyed 2,000 workers. Almost one third of those surveyed believed they had been affected by a poor work-life balance, citing long working hours and high workloads among their main difficulties.  According to Dr Luise Vassie, executive director of policy at IOSH,: “The struggle to achieve a good work-life balance is an ever growing issue in today’s society. It seems that too many of us are letting work take hold of our lives, too many are seeing their relationships outside of work suffer as a consequence. This isn’t solely a problem for the employee – an unhappy worker is often an unproductive one.”

Almost two thirds of those questioned said their work-life balance was poor or could be better.
